On Ravelry, a knitting and crocheting online community, members are competing in Ravelympics by challenging themselves with projects during the time of the regular Winter Olympics. My first project was in the Aerial Unwind event… unraveling a project and preparing the yarn to be repurposed into something else.
One of my first knitting projects, A Simple First Sweater, was given to my mother, who lives in NC… far too warm a location for such a cozy item! I requested to have the sweater back to re-purpose the yarn, and Ravelympics was the perfect time to do the un-working.
I began the work on Friday evening, as the Opening Ceremonies commenced. The sweater started like this -
Egads, it’s more work to take a sweater apart than it is to put it together! I managed to disengage the arm and side seams, shoulder seams (both around the arm and from neck to shoulder), and reskein the lilac from the bottom edge… all with ONE snip – one yarn that I could not get disentangled to find a loose end. I was pretty happy; even with the one snip, I did not lose much yarn at all – just the few yards that were used to seam the sweater. The raw snip cost me maybe two yards at most. Not bad for a night’s work.
The skeins were quite kinky, though it doesn’t show in the photos I took that night. The next step was to re-wet the yarn and hang it to dry, which looks like this -
Once the yarn is dried, it can be wound again and stored until the next project. Here it is, ready to go!
I finished washing and drying the final skeins on Sunday evening, and they were dry by midnight. Completed and ready for a next project, though I don’t know that will be yet. In appreciation for my work, Ravlery has bestowed upon me a special avatar as well as a badge (in lieu of a gold medal…)
On to new projects!
