My Left Foot. Hah, get it?!

May 29th, 2012

I’ve had bunions on both feet for a while now. Sometimes they hurt. The right foot looks worse (has a bigger bump), but the left foot hurts more often. On Friday, I had surgery to fix the left one. I’m off work all this week, which worked out nicely because Monday was already a holiday.

Chris and Rachel accompanied me to the surgery center. I was surprised to find an old friend, Sue Beyard, was on staff and attending my procedure! What a comforting blessing. She’s a lot of fun, but I also trust her – she and her husband were kind enough to open their home to us for a couple of years when Chris I were newlyweds, giving us a key so we could let ourselves in and do laundry as needed, since our mobile home park didn’t have facilities (read that: good water) for a washing machine. They fixed us food when we had babies (I used to joke that having a new baby was a hefty price for her yummy baked mac and cheese). So it was a real breath of “Whew” when I saw Sue’s face smiling at me through the office window as I checked in.

Friday was fine; Friday evening and Saturday were not. Lots of pain, a grand headache and nausea (which I later realized/remembered was the anesthesia), and a lot of minute-counting, time-crunching misery. By Saturday evening, I had napped and the ick had lifted. I was down to simple foot pain, albeit a good bit of it. I’ve had Vicodin to keep me company, but thankfully have only need one pill at a time since Saturday.

I’ve been hobbling around on this:

Boot for foot surgery

I got a semi-bath late Sunday evening, so Monday was more human-like. Actually, Monday was much better. I was able to get a couple of simple (very simple!) chores done. I didn’t feel throbbing as I moved my foot from spot to spot. And by late evening, it even stopped hurting except twinges for a while here and there. I finished a sock I had started back in March. (Oh the irony – I have only one foot and it’s hot, so I won’t wear these for many months!)

Socks of Kindness - finished

You can see my bandaged foot – I won’t have it unwrapped until FRIDAY – a WEEK after surgery!!! Curiosity is killing me, but I’m being obedient to the doctor.

I’ve caught up on TV, listened to podcasts, read one book, and started another. I’ve started a very simple, mindless pair of socks. I’ve got homeschool work to go over with Becky and Katie. I’m SO incredibly thankful for this week off work, and so beyond glad that I’ve got my wits about me while I’m home. Lots to do, and little time to do it! (And yes… all from my chair, without moving around much, staying off my feet, etc….)
